Not all gemstones are created equal, and the differences matter when you're making a purchase.

Diamonds are graded on four factors: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Cut has the biggest impact on how a diamond looks. A well-cut stone will outshine a larger one with a poor cut every time.

Colored gemstones like sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are graded differently. Color saturation, origin, and treatment history all factor into value. Lab-created versions of most gemstones exist and are chemically identical to natural stones at a lower price point.
